Having fashion literacy entails being able to understand and use fashion vocabulary, which can further be used to communicate various designs and cuts. Additionally, fashion literacy involves knowing what types of garments and accessories look good on individuals in terms of colour (ex: what types of colours compliment each other as well as the individual’s skin tone and hair colour), patterns (ex: what types of patterns can be paired with various body shapes), textures (ex: how to care for certain types of garments), and shape. Furthermore, it encompasses being able to combine various fashion pieces as a means of self-expression. It can also involve knowing what kinds of trends are in style.

Literacy is most popularly referred to as the ability to read and write. However, the definition of literacy has evolved from this to become more complex and inclusive. Literacy not only involves technical skills, such as reading and writing, but it also encompasses the ability to develop one’s knowledge through proficiency and within a community of practice. Furthermore, literacy involves being able to effectively communicate one’s thoughts, ideas, and emotions within a shared domain.
Being a part of the fashion community entails having a shared interest for fashion. Because of this common interest, membership involves a commitment to fashion, which includes a shared competence that separates members from others. It also involves exchanging information (ex: what trends are in style) and having a shared language (ex: vocabulary) .
This is a community I am a part of because I possess a strong interest and literacy in fashion. My friends and family are aware that I have 'an eye for fashion' and often ask me to accompany them during their shopping excursions. Additionally, they often ask me for advice on where to shop (ex: what types of stores will have what they are looking for) and what kinds of styles, colours, and patterns would suit their bodies as well as their fashion styles.
Ever since I was little, I have had a strong interest in fashion. When my friends would come over, I would put on a fashion show by transforming my room into a runway set. I would hang bed sheets from the ceiling, which would be used as the backdrop for the stage. My friends would take on various roles (models, audience members, judges) and I was usually the designer. I would take my mother's long scarves from her closet and turn them into outfits, which the models wore down the makeshift runway.
Putting on these types of fashion shows for my friends helped to establish my interest in fashion, which still exists today (If you don't believe me, just take a tour through my walk-in closet!). Though I do not have much knowledge in terms of brand names and runway styles, I do have a good understanding of what kinds of cuts, styles, textures, and colours suit various body types.
