- In the late 1950s Ms. Sokolow was the first modern dance choreographer to have her work (Rooms) presented on national television.
- Urban Isolation- Each piece depicts an emotion of loneliness. Sokolow is portraying this from first hand experiences of her childhood
- Trained with Martha Graham, Louis Harst
- Choreographed for major dance companies in Israel including Batsheva, Kibbutz Dance Company, and Lyric Theatre.
- Also featured in Broadway theater . Her credits include Street Scene, Camino Real, Candide, and the original Hair.
- Has a lifelong association with the dance and theater arts in Mexico. Her work for the Mexican Ministry of Fine Arts grew to become the National Academy of Dance there
- longtime faculty member of the Julliard School in both the dance and drama divisions.
- passed away in her home in New York City on March 29, 2000, at the age of 90.
Who is Anna Sokolow?
- Born 1910 in Connecticut and was raised with a Jewish background. Her parents immigrated from Prinsk to the U.S. and found life in the U.S. difficult
- Fell in love with dance at an early age & was sponsored through Sisterhood org. to take dance classes
- Dropped out of school and left home to pursue a career in dance
- Believing strongly that dance could be more than mere entertainment, she explored the most pressing issues of her day from the Great Depression, to the Holocaust, to the alienated youth of the 1960s—and challenged her audiences to think deeply about themselves and their society.
