The Vietnam War caused deep divisions in the US, including for the generation that lived through the war. According to 1988 survey, 10 percent of the Vietnam veterans suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, a condition which causes panic, rage, anxiety, and depression. This can lead to high rates of stress.

The Vietnam War started because it wanted to break away from France. (It used to be a colony of France when it was called French Indochina.)

France wanted Vietnam for it's valuable exports, like rice and rubber.

Soon, France and Vietnam made an agreement, dividing Vietnam into North and South. The South was occupied by the France, but the North was not.

Ho Chi Minh wanted Vietnam to become one country and that is when the Vietnam War offically began.

The US started to aid France because it wanted to stop Vietnam to be communist.

.

In January, 1973, a crease fire was arranged. The last US troops left Vietnam two months later. Despite the treaty, the fighting between south and north Vietnam resumed soon afterward. But US troops did not return.

After a long, bloody, terrible war, the Vietnam War is finally over. The last of the American troops were sent back to the US. North Vietnam take over South Vietnam and they united as one country, a communist country.

People often ask "Was this war justified?"

  • North Vietnam- Wanted to be free from France.

  • South Vietnam- Didn't want to fight the French.

  • America- Didn't want Vietnam to be a communist
  • Soviet Union- Wanted Vietnam to become a communist country.

NOOOO!!!!!!!

Agent Orange was a chemical that caused the tree leaves in Vietnam to fall.

US thought that is would be a solution for the undergrowth.

But not only did this chemical cause leaves to fall, but also caused health problems along with deformation.

The children in Vietnam looked horrifying because they are deformed.

  • "I don't agree with those who say we should withdraw. That would be a great mistake."-John F. Kennedy

This is because there was approximately 3,258,000 deaths in all. Also, we lost the Vietnam War, and Vietnam is now a communist country. Even more surprising, US troops were not given a hero's welcome, but called losers or killers

This war was not justified, because the US lost the war. Even if we didn't fight the war, the result will be the same: Vietnam will be a united as one communist country.

.

"This war caused millions of deaths, even from the innocents. Why should this war be justified?"-Nuo Li

  • President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas.

The American troops took over a hill near the fort on the second day of the battle and North Vietnam fought back hard.

John F Kennedy

Lyndon D. Johnson

  • Ho Chi Minh- Leader of North Vietnam
  • Martin Luther King JR- Made anti-war speeches
  • John F. Kennedy-First president involved in the war
  • Lyndon B Johnson- Another president in the war

"I DO NOT think this war is justified because it was bloodly and cruel."- Cadence Tan

In 1978, the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia, removing the Khmer Rouge from power. The Chinese then invaded Vietnam, but were driven back. The Vietnamese occupied Cambodia for 20 years.

One of the worst battles in the Vietnam War, and U.S. troops called it a "meat grinder."

"When the US soliders came back from the war, they were not greeted a hero's welcome; instead, they were treated and called as losers." -Tedd Lee

  • US lost about 58,000 people.
  • Approximately 2 million Vietnamese civilians were killed.
  • North Vietnam lost more than 1.1 million troops.
  • South Vietnam lost 200,000 troops. That's a lot of deaths!

.

  • China's second most important leader Liu Shaoqi visited North Vietnam. He told Ho Chi Minh and other North Vietnamese leaders that they could count on China as "the strategic rear" if the Vietnam War expanded. Between 1956 and 1963, China provided about 320 million yuan (about 130 million U.S. dollars) in military assistance to North Vietnam, including arms, ammunition, trucks, planes, and ships.

Lasted 9 days and 630 communists were dead along with 56 dead Americans.

"The Vietnam War caused chain reactions, which lead to bigger problems."- Joanne Pan

Note from the teacher...

This impressive Prezi was created by some hardworking fifth graders with minimal teacher input. The use of primary sources by students (including the striking cover photo) from that time period was due to students' work with the book, The Vietnam War: The Causes, events, and legacy, by P. Chrisp showcasing the 1st "televised war". It features many striking primary source images and quotes of people involved that reveal in all it's starkness what the Vietnam War was like. --Ms. Silberman
