Shawshank Redemption "institutionalized"

Morgan Freeman as "Red"

the end

Precis

In The Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King, Red explains, through use of colloquial diction and extended metaphors, that their friend, Brooks, has become"institutionalized". Using calm, simple syntax King depicts Red as a credible character with a wise demeanor as he sticks up for Brooks. This also contrasts with the chraracters of the other inmates who In this way King connects the audience to the story by giving them someone to root for. The audience sympathizes with Brooks because naturally the reader wants the under dog to beat all odds. While also creating suspense and mystery as to what Brooks fate will be after he leaves the prison, Red expresses a fear for Brooks that also boils underneath his wise facade by personifying the walls of Shawshank.
