The SIDE theory was developed and first named in 1991 by Lea and Spears, and then later expanded on in 1992. (Lea & Spears, 1992; Postmes, Spears, & Lea, 1998; Spears & Lea, 1994).

Two ways you might be affected via the internet, through inappropriate behavior is flaming and cyberbullying.

Flaming: digital communication that is

deliberately hostile, aggressive or insulting and usually intended to provoke anger.

Cyberbullying: abusive attacks that are carried out through social media.
