History

Rise of Movement

Fall of Movement

Historical Events

"Realism is nothing more and nothing less than the truthful treatment of material.” --William Dean Howells, “Editor’s Study,” Harper's New Monthly Magazine (November 1889), p. 966.

The movement came out of Romanticism, which focused primarily on optimism. Realism focuses on the harsh reality of life.

The focus of realism is on the common-man. It is to depict the average man, and the life of the average man. The beginnings of the realist style of writing can be attributed to French novelist Honoré de Balzac. His portraits of ordinary French life were remarkable in their careful attention to details, which was one of the main characteristics of the realism movement.

The movement started in 1860

and lasted until 1940.

The movement that arguable came out of the movement was Naturalism. The two are very similar in nature.

Movement Characteristics

Realism was the most truthful in its portrayal of society and the world in what would have been its current state. The writing was journalistic in nature as it served as a real representation of the era it was written during. The characters in the novels were mostly middle class and were typically more important than plot developments. These novels, poems, and short stories criticized the social constructions of the time and questioned the status quo.
