"Netiquette" is network etiquette, the do's and don'ts of online communication. Netiquette covers both common courtesy online and the informal "rules of the road" of cyberspace.

DON'T:

  • Be negative, confrontational or controversial
  • Swear or cuss
  • Use ALL CAPS
  • Spam
  • Plagiarize
  • Use Texting language

DO:

  • Cultivate friendships
  • Employ correct spelling & grammar
  • Look for opportunities to help
  • Be authentic, friendly, & interesting
  • Mind your manners

Common concerns:

  • Malware

TIPS

  • Think before you act: Be wary of communications that implore you to act immediately, offer something that sounds too good to be true or ask for personal information.
  • Own your online presence: Set the privacy and security settings on web services and devices to your comfort level for information sharing.

Broadly, the term refers to practices and precautions you should observe when using the Internet, so as to ensure that your personal information and your computer remain safe.

Digital citizenship is the norms of appropriate, responsible technology use.

Digital Footprint & Reputation

Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

  • Prohibits unfair or deceptive acts or practices in connection with the collection, use, and/or disclosure of personal information from and about children (under 13) on the Internet.

The information about a particular person that exists on the Internet as a result of their online activity.

What is Digital Literacy?

Digital literacy is the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills.

  • College admissions and employers do read your online profiles and they do make decisions based upon information they find out about you online.

  • Keep private information private. You may think you can easily hit delete, and what you sent goes away. But it truly doesn’t.

  • Create a profile that says simple, non-specific details about yourself, but that is still identifiably you.

  • Build your own positive image and brand yourself in a great way.

Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is bullying or harassment that happens online. It can happen in many forms.

Help Prevent Cyberbullying

  • Talk to your kids about bullying.
  • Recognize the signs of a cyberbully.
  • Help stop cyberbullying.

TIPS:

  • Don't react to the bully.
  • Protect your child’s profile.
  • Block or delete the bully.
