The Jamestown Settlement

In December of 1606, the London Company sent 3 ships to North America: The Discovery, The Susan Constant, and the Godspeed.

There were 144 men, and 0 women.

The ride over was tough... more than 40 died at sea.

In April of 1607, the ships reached Virginia.

They sailed into the Chesapeake Bay and found a river.

They called the river the James River, after their king.

Approximately 60 miles up the river, the colonists established a settlement named Jamestown.

The location was great for looking out for Spanish ships.

The swampy land that they settled on was infested with mosquitoes, so many of the settlers died of malaria or typhoid fever.

Many of the settlers came from wealthy families, so they did not know how to

cut wood, build homes, and plant crops.

Because of that, 1/2 of the settlers had died by September of 1607.

By January of 1608, there were only 38 still alive.

That means 106 men had died!

When the London Company sent the setters, they had appointed a board of 13 men to lead the others.

The board quarrled, and many abandoned their privilege of being a leader.

So, the brave John Smith took over.

He was annoyed by the men who compained about the colony.

He bargained for supplies with the Native Americans.

(The Powhatan Confederacy)

John claimed to be captured by the Powhatans, but was later released.

He also said that a young girl named Pocahontas(sound familiar??) begged for his life when she was just 13 years old. (She was the daughter of the leader of the Powhatans.

Pocahontas later fell in love with colonist John Rolfe, and the two got married.

And Now, Ladies and Gentlemen, here is a skit about the "Starving
