Pema Tinley: Sentenced to four years in Feb. 2013. Family denied visiting rights.

Since 2012 the Chinese government has jailed over 11 Tibetan singers for using music to oppose Chinese rule.

Tibetan musician who was arrested for using music as a protest platform.

GayBay: Arrested at a concert hall after performing. Currently being detained.

Tibetan burns himself in protest to Chinese rule.

Genres of Music

In general, music is religious and centered around four monostatic schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

  • Nyingmapa (Dramatic): more elaborate, with performances.
  • Gelugpa (Classical): style with little instrumentation.
  • Sakyapa
  • Kagyupa
