Soon after becoming familiarizing himself with life at Camp Half Blood, it becomes a second Ordinary World. When a hell-hound and unusual weather patterns disrupt it, a second call occurs. Percy is called to see Chiron, Dionysus (the Camp Director) and The Oracle. Now, Percy must leave Camp Half Blood and find the real lightning thief.
The novel not only follows the monomyth, or paradigm, of the Hero’s Journey, but also includes many Greek gods, monsters and mythical beings that were included in many of the original “Hero Journeys” from classical mythology. The camp that Percy attends is Camp Half Blood, a camp for demigods (the children of gods and mortals). Percy himself is the son of Poseidon, God of the Sea, his friend Grover is a satyr, and Annabeth is a daughter of Athena, goddess of wisdom and battle strategies. Other notable characters based on Greek mythology in Camp Half Blood are the camp director, Dionysus (the God of wine and fertility), and the activities director, Chiron, a centaur (half horse half human) who has trained many heroes from Greek myths.
On the Quest, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover encounter many monsters from Greek myths, such as Medusa and the Chimera. Other Gods they encounter are Hermes, the messenger God, Hades, God of the Underworld, and Ares, God of war. Finally, they encounter the protagonist, Luke, the son of Hermes. Percy has to fight him to retrieve the Master Bolt, a stolen weapon of the God of the Sky, Zeus.
Percy Jackson the protagonist put his life In danger to rescue his mother from the under world and restore the lightning bolt to Zeus even thought he had nothing to do with it's disappearance. In restoring the bolt he maintained peace between the gods before they broke out in a full scale war. Juring his quest / journey he grows in his knowledge of who he is from his birth right aswell as his responsibility over others.
Water is Percy’s special weapon. However, water also symbolizes life throughout the novel. When he is injured during Capture the Flag, water uses his water power to heal himself. He does this several times throughout the novel and the rest of the series. Water is also the place where Percy is able to clear his mind and think properly and clearly. It strengthens him mentally as well as physically. Percy also uses water as a way to fight, and as a way to protect himself. By using water to heal and protect himself, it makes water a symbol of life as it is what Percy uses to keep himself alive.
Other texts also recognize water as being an element that represents life. Many sources acknowledge that life came from water and that we need water to survive (to drink, to cook, etc.). This was explained in another fantasy series about myths and ancient Gods, “The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flammel”.
The Ordinary World
During this stage we get to identify with the hero's urges, drives and problems. Identify the problem that disrupts the Ordinary World.
In the beginning of the novel we learn about Percy Jackson. We learn that he has dyslexia, and ADHD and went to a school for troubled kids. He lives with his mother and abusive, alcoholic step-father, Gabe. His best friend, Grover, has "polio". He's not well-liked at school but has a great relationship with his mom.
Return With The Elixir
1st Call To Adventure
Quotes
"I'm twelve years old. Until a few months ago, I was a boarding student at Yancy Academy, a private school for troubled kids in upstate New York."
"Where are we going?" I asked.
"The summer camp I told you about. "
The call to adventure disrupts the comfort of the Ordinary World. May come in different forms (action, message, arrival etc.)
When Percy is attacked by the Harpy at the museum, Percy's ordinary life is disrupted. Grover then takes Percy and his mom to Camp Halfblood, but en route they are attacked by a minotaur. Percy's identity as a demigod is gradually revealed to him.
The final reward. Harmony and balance are restored to the ordinary world. The hero shares the elixir of the journey with others or heals a wounded land.
Percy Jackson returns to the Half blood camp where he is celebrated as a hero who prevented a war from breaking out between the gods.
1st Refusal of the Call
The hero has fears and insecurities, and he/she prefers the safe haven of the Ordinary World. This demonstrates the risks involved in the journey.
Percy does not necessarily refuse this call. He is scared because he does not really know what is going on, but he soon realizes that he has no choice but to accept the fact that he is a demigod if he wants to survive.
Quotes
"Mom! I am not leaving you. Now help me with Grover."
"This bead commemorates the first Son of the Sea God at this camp, and the quest he undertook into the darkest part of the Underworld to stop a war!"
The Resurrection
2nd Call to Adventure
This is where the hero is reborn or transformed. He/she must prove he has reached heroic status and accept his sacrifice for the benefit of the ordinary world.
He has finally come to terms with who he is as a person and has given up his struggle against destiny by training to get ready for future quests.
2nd Refusal of the Call
Quotes
"You'll meet worse, Percy. Far worse, before you're done." "Done... With what?" "Your quest, of course. Will you accept it?" [Chiron]
Gabe turned toward me and spoke in the rasping voice of the Oracle: You shall go west, and face the god who has turned. His buddy on the right looked up and said in the same voice: You shall find what was stolen, and see it safely returned. The guy on the left threw in two poker chips, then said: You shall he betrayed by one who calls you a friend. Finally, Eddie, our building super, delivered the worst line of all: And you shall fail to save what matters most, in the end.
This time, Percy is a little more reluctant to accept the journey. He knows that he is not the true thief, so he questions why it is him who has to go. Of course, he is eventually persuaded to accept and find the thief.
"So I have to find the stupid bolt, " I said.
"And return it to Zeus. "
I spent my days devising new strategies for capture-the-flag and making alliances with the other cabins to keep the banner out of Ares's hands.
Meeting The Mentor
The Road Back
The mentor guides the hero and provides them with confidence, insight, advice, training, or magical gifts.
Percy's mentor in the novel is Chiron, the centaur (formerly Mr. Brunner, his Latin teacher). Chiron introduces Percy to the world of Demi-Gods and helps prepare him for his journey. He is also the activities director. He gives Percy a magical sword that can be disguised as a fountain pen.
The hero must accept the road back to the ordinary world. Like crossing the threshold, the hero needs an event that will push him back; a force that draws him out of the special world.
Percy does not necessarily return to the ordinary world, but goes back to camp Halfblood to continue to learn and train.
"I'll give you five minutes to get your stuff and clear out. After that, I call the police."
"Where will you go, Percy?"
"Half-Blood Hill."
“I’m sure the boy can learn.”
“I’m afraid there’s too much to tell, I’m afraid our usual orientation video won’t be sufficient.”
Reward
Crossing The Threshold
Having survived "death" the hero receives what he sought; which comes in many forms. This allows the hero to replenish himself and the audience to catch a breath.
Percy and his friends return to New York and he explains what he has learned to the Gods. They begrudgingly thank him.
This part of the journey signifies that the hero has committed to the journey. The threshold separates the Ordinary World from the Special World.
In The Lightning Thief, Percy crosses the threshold when he, Grover, and Annabeth leaves Camp Half Blood and embark on their Quest to find the Lightning Thief.
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is the first installment in the Percy Jackson series. It follows a 12 year old dyslexic boy as he discovers he is the progeny of the Greek God Poseidon. Sent to a camp for "half -bloods" (other children of Greek Gods) he begins to unlock his true potential. When he is blamed for the theft of Zeus' lightning bolt, Percy must embark on a journey along with Grover, a satyr and his best friend, and Annabeth, daughter of Athena, to clear his name and find the true thief.
“All right, it’s better than being turned into a dolphin.”
“’Then it’s time you consulted the Oracle,’ Chiron said. “Go upstairs, Percy Jackson, to the attic. When you come down, assuming you’re still sane, we will talk more.”
"You have done me a service, boy. Few heroes could have accomplished as much."
"You will find her at home. Hades sent her when you recovered his helm. Even the Lord of Death pays his debts."
The Ordeal
Tests, Allies, Enemies
The Hero learns the rules of the Special World. He must learn who can be trusted as his skills and powers are tested.
As they search the country to find the Thief, Percy, Grover, and Annabeth, encounter many characters, such as Medusa, that act as challenges. During their journey Grover and Annabeth help Percy learn about the world of Greek Gods and half-bloods.
This is the central 'life or death' crisis (or crises). The hero faces his greatest fear and experiences "death". It is only through this "death" that the hero can be reborn. This resurrection grants greater powers or insight.
This is where Percy realizes that Ares hadn't orchestrated the theft but knew about it and was trying to start a war. (Duh, war God). Percy fights him and nearly killed. Ultimately he is able to hit his weak spot and Ares leaves defeated.
"Monsters would stop at nothing to kill me."
"I stepped back into the creek.....Instantly I felt better. I could feel the cuts on my chest closing up."
"Percy, take the sword. Your father believes in you."
"Hades will be mad at both Zeus and Poseidon, because he doesn't know who took this. Pretty soon, we got a nice little three-way slugfest going....Best kind of war. Always the bloodiest."
"Someone else sent a hero to steal the two items. Then, when Zeus sent you to hunt him down, you caught the thief. But you didn't turn him over to Zeus. Something convinced you to let him go. You kept the items until another hero could come along and complete the delivery. That thing in the pit is ordering you around."
"You have made an enemy, godling," he told me. "You have sealed your fate. Every time you raise your blade in battle, every time you hope for success, you will feel my curse. Beware, Perseus Jackson. Beware."
Approach To The Inmost Cave
The inmost cave leads to the journey's heart or central ideal. The hero has survived his descent into the special world. The hero often takes a respite before facing the ordeal.
After Percy, Grover and Annabeth return from the Underworld they walk along a shoreline and discuss the impending war. They have realized that someone is trying to frame Poseidon for stealing from Zeus to start a war.
Quotes
"Poseidon will get blamed by both sides. By sundown today there will be a three-way war. And I'll have caused it."
