Similarity:

M.E.S & M.M.C Both concern cultural differences between Pacific Island parents and "Westernised" children.

These quotes show that both the son and daughter in each poem are embarrassed by their mothers' ways.

Both concern mother and child relationships

My Educated Son: "his own mother"

Difference:

M.M.C is about a close relationship between a mother and daughter. The daughter admires her mother and feels lucky for the way she was brought up.

Evidence:

"It's because of her I can sew my own."

This quote uses the coat metaphor to say that her mother showed her how to make her way in the world. The coat represents her identity, and because of her mother, the poet says she can make her own identity.

M.E.S:

This poem shows a mother waiting at the airport for her son to return home from school overseas. It shows her disappointment and shame when he walks past her.

"He walks away

I burst into tears

Crying, crying and crying

Calling his name"

This quote shows the mother's emotional state when her son walks past her without looking at her.

Similarity:

Narrative perspective effects the way the story is told.

M.M.C:

Told from the perspective of the daughter, the poem shows how the way your see your parents changes as you grow up

"If only I knew then what I know now"

M.E.S:

This poem shows a mother's shame

I’m very old

I’m a skinny woman

I’m a dirty mother

I’m not good enough

These words show what the mother thinks of herself. They might not be true, but show she feels inferior to her son.
