Zaydeh

Zaydeh was Ruth's Grandpa which she loved very much. Although when he died it was Ruth's first encounter with death in her life.

Bubeh was Ruth's grandmother who lived in New York. She was a main person in Ruth's life who cared for her and helped her after she left home after high school.

A quote that describes her is when Ruth said "Bubeh was a warm, funny woman who spoke no English and was full of life... She was clean as a whistle. pg.132

A quote he was mentioned in was when Ruth said "I remember when Zaydeh died in that apartment. I don't know how he died, he just died." pg.17

Aunt Mary

Laura is Ruth's aunt and she is the oldest aunt that Ruth has. She helped Hudis and her family emigrate to the United States

Aunt Betsy helped Ruth when she was going through her abortion. Aunt Betsy wanted nothing to do with Ruth after she married a black man.

Aunt mary was one of Ruth's aunts who treated her badly because she felt that Ruth didn't belong in the family. Her factory was where Ruth and dennis met.

She was described by Ruth as "richest of my mother's sisters, a meticulous woman and a faboulous dresser who wore white gloves and beutifully colored dresses." pg.130

Ruth was grateful for Aunt Betsy even though "she slammed the door in my face years later". pg.135

Ruth described Aunt Mary as "She was mean to meas the day was long." pg.131

Tateh was Ruth's father who was very mean, racist, and strict man. He sexually abused Ruth and also emotionaly abused her and his wife.

Mameh was Ruth's mother who suffered polo most of her life. She was very alone and her husband treated her like she didn't exist. Ruth loved her mother, but she had to leave her to go to New York.

Ruth was scared of her father as she said "I was afraid of Tateh and had no love for him at all." pg.42

Ruth had guilt of leaving her mom as she said "I've always held that to this day, that guilt that I left Mameh." pg.217

Sam Shilsky

Gladys Shilsky (Dee-Dee)

Sam was Ruth's brother who died in WWII. He ran away at 15 to join the army after not being able to take the abuse from his father.

Ruth's younger sister Dee-Dee was shyer then Ruth. Ruth promised her that she would never leave home,but she broke the promise. Because of that when Ruth needed help she shut her out.

Ruth promised Dee-Dee that she wouldn't leave since she kept saying "Promise me you'll stay." pg201

Ruth described her older brother as "Sam was like a shadow.." which showed he was very quiet and soft spoken. pg.61

Aunt Candis

Aunt Candis was Andrew's favorite aunt candis went to help out Ruth with the kids after Andrew's death. She helped Ruth impress her second husband.

A quote that Aunt Candis said to ruth was "Marry that man, Ruth. Marry him!" pg.246

Ruth is a Jewish Polish immigrant who is a mother to twelve successful children. She is a strong women who has been through many things in her life, but has always overcome them.

Dennis was Ruth's first husband and a father to twelve of his and Ruth's children. He met Ruth at her aunt's factory and was the first man to show ruth love. He was a christain man that was very religious.

Hunter was Ruth's secound husband which they had four children. Hunter saved Ruth which was going through a tough time with the loss of her first husband.

Her son James described her as "a nonhalance in the face of what I perceived to be imminent danger from blacks and whites who disliked her for being a white person in a black world. She saw none of that." pg.8

When Dennis died Ruth described how it felt to her as she said "A part of me died when Dennis died." pg244

When he was about to die Ruth knew as she said "I knew he was gonna die and I had to blink back my tears." pg.128

Richard Nelson (Big Richard)

Jacqueline (Jack) Nelson

Andrew's daughter from a previous marriage, who lived in Harlem. Jack took care of Ruth when she ran away from home and also took care of James in the summer.

Richard was Jack's husband. he thought many life lessons to James while he stayed with them, in the summer. james described him as a handful for Jack and he always had a lit cigarette between his teeth.

James described Jack by saying "Everybody loved Jack. You could talk to Jack about anything." pg.76

James described Richard when he said "He could walk into a night-club and sniff danger instantly, backing out right away." pg.144

Judy is James half-sister who graduated from Columbia University and became a teacher.

Kathy was a younger sister of James and she was more of the attractive sister growing up. She graduated from Syracuse University and became a special education teacher.

Henry is James youngest half-brother who hated his mothers cooking even though he would eat it.

Hunter was James half-brother and he graduated from Syracuse University to become a computer consultant.

Rosetta was James oldest sister and she always tried to keep her siblings out of trouble. She later on worked to be a pshycologist.

Andrew was the oldest out of all the children and a very successful person. He went to medical school and made his mother very proud. She always bragged about him and wanted her other children to end up like him.

Richard was the closet in age to James and they were always together. They both had a passion for music and many girls liked Richard growing up. He became a chemistry professor later in life.

Helen was James older sister who was calm, talkative, and gentile. She dropped out of school because she didn't want the white man education.

Dorothy is one of Jame's older sister. She later became a medical office manager.

Henry attended "North carolina A&T University." pg277

James describes Judy at age nine as "Judy was nine at the time and also played the piano, was suddenly pressed into service." pg.72

Hunter is only brought up in the book when James list all his siblings. pg.277

James was very protective of Kathy and sometimes he would get hurt as he said "I got my nose nearly broken over Kathy a few times." pg.71

James is one of the authors of this memoir. As a child he struggled with identifying who he is. Growing up with a white Jewsih mother and being brown confused him. After finding out who he was he ended up being a successful author.

William aslo called Billy is James older brother who alwasy messed with his siblings. He then went to school and graduated from Yale University.

David was Williams partner in messing with his older sibilings. He went to college at Penn State and became a University chairman of African American history at Penn State.

Dorothy got her bachelor's degree at "La Salle University" pg.276

James described why his mother was proud of Andrew when he said "Dennis was going to be a doctor." pg70

James remeber his brother Richard saying "Naw. If they put Jesus in this picture here, and he ain't white, and he aint't black, they should make him gray. Jesus should be gray." pg.53

James described her in the quote by saying "Helen was at war with the white man and took it home and laid it on Mommy's feet." pg.71

She graduated from "Howard University" and got her bachelors degree. pg275

He also recieved his masters degree at the "University of Columbia." pg.275

William got his doctorite degree at "Yale University." pg275
