Stage 4: Addiction
The drug user has lost all of his or her control of his or her drug-taking habit. An addict learns to be distrustful and paranoid. The way of dealing with problems prevents the development of normal coping skills that are not par of growing up.
Stage 3: Dependence
The drug user expierences uncomfortable withdrawl symptoms if he or she tries to stop using the drug. The state in which the body relies on a given drug in order to function normally is known as physical dependence. The state of emotionally or mentally needing the drug in order to function normally is called psychological dependence.
Stage 2: Tolerance
The drug user needs more of the drug to produce the same effect. This develops after repeated drug use when the user finds that it takes more of a drug to feel the same effect felt when first taking the drug.
Stage 1: Drug Use
Getting pleasure is one reason why people abuse drugs. Drugs produce biological changes in the brain that change the way the brain works- possibly permanently. Drug use activates the brain reward system. Adolescent brains are more vulnerable to the effects of drugs than adult brains are.
