Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt and 4-5 men charged up San Juan Hill. He urged his troops through enemy fire and this displayed bravery. A great majority of his men were soldiers and the rest were volunteers. This bravery led him to reach the enemy trenches. His leadership and valor helped win the Battle for San Juan Hill.
General Weyler of Spain had sent thousands of Cubans into concentration camps in Cuba in 1896. Under the watch of Weyler, the Cubans had eight days to move into the camps located in towns. Unfortunately, any person who didn't obey was shot. By 1898, 1/3 of Cuba's population had been force to a concentration camps.This caused over 400,000 Cubans to died as a result of the policy.
Governor McKinley was popular with the Republican Party and his chief political supporter. Because of his popularity he got nominated on the first ballot. He received 661 votes. After serving 4 years in office, McKinley's popularity grew larger after his victory of the Spanish-American war and was an obvious choice for reelection in 1900. His second term as President came to a horrific end when he was assassinated. He had won against Bryan in the election because Bryan was against imperialism.
This revolution was Cuba's first struggle for their independence. Historian Stephan Ambrose stated, The United States "had to find some new outlet for our energy, for our dynamic nature, for this coiled spring that was the United States". Many journalist like William Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer were very interested in the Cuban struggle to help sell millions of newspapers. The main leaders in this revolt were Maximo Gomez, Claixto Garcia, Jose Marti and the Cuba Revolution party. Jose Marti was a poet as well as a journalist. Its important because they wanted their independence .
The U.S. Squadron destroyed the Spanish Pacific fleet at the first battle of the Spanish-American War.The Battle of Manila Bay made the American Commander (George Dewey) a hero, and would announce the arrival of the United States as a big player in the world. It occurred only days after the declaration of war, on May 1, 1898. The ships involved the USS Olympia, USS Boston, USS Petrel, and the USS Monocacy.

An explosion had sank the U.S.S. Maine in Cuba. We didn't know who had sunk our ship but we had a couple of suspicions on who it might have been. It could have been Cuba, or Spain, or maybe it was an accident. Many people though that it was Spain. Today, many historians believe that it was a malfunction in the ship which caused it to explode.
Spanish Ambassador, Enrique Dupuy de Lome, wrote a personal letter to Jose Canalejas. In this letter he criticized President McKinley and his policy's concerning Cuba. The Cuban rebels got ahold of this letter and exposed Dupuy de Lome. The criticisms became the headline across the country and the United States public were furious. This letter force the U.S. closer to war.
The treaty of Paris helped end the Spanish-American War. It was signed by representatives of Spain and the United States in Paris on December 10, 1898. The treaty was the end of the Spanish Empire in America and the Pacific Islands. It is marked as the beginning of the age of the US as a world power. The American peace commission consisted of William R. Day, Sen. Cushman K. Davis, Sen. William P. Frye, Sen. George Gray, and the Honorable Whitelaw Reid.
On October 15th 1854, William L. Marcy, the Secretary of States, directed the U.S. ministers to Spain, France, And Great Britain tried to sell Cuba to the states. The three ministers came together at Ostend in 1854. The threatened to invade Cuba if Spain didn't sell the island the United States. The document became know as the Ostend Manifesto. This document ended up being a embarrassment of American Diplomacy.
The US military, (which was led by Major General Nelson A. Miles)the force of 8,000 troops, and several naval ships invaded Puerto Rico. The first target was the harbor of Guanica. It was the target because it was not heavily protected by the Spanish troops. Three days later, General Guy Henry and his men, captured Yauco. The US issued a statement to the people of Puerto Rico assuring them that the Americans will be bringing them freedom.
