In September of 1739, the Stono Rebellion took place. The Rebellion started when about 20 slaves gathered by the Stono River. They had weapons, they killed some planters. They also had drums which they beat as they walked along the river shouting "Liberty". They got other slaves to join them until they reached numbers around 100. Many slaves were killed in the fighting, but others were captured and executed.
Queen Elizabeth I gave Sir Walter Raleigh permission to create the first English colony in the Americas. In 1585 the colony was established on Roanoke Island. The colony was named Virginia after the unmarried, or virgin, queen. But soon, lack of food and disagreements with local tribes forced the colonists to return to England.
Colonists wanted more self government. In response, the Virginia Company decided that burgesses (elected representatives) would form the House of Burgesses and that they would meet once a year. The House of Burgesses was created in 1619, and it was the first representative assembly in the colonies. The House of Burgesses could raise taxes and pass local laws.
Rodger Williams had different ideas than the Puritans, and after speaking out against them, he was banished. In 1636 he left Massachusetts and founded Rhode Island. Rhode Island had religious freedom, and the church and state were separated. Other people, such as Anne Hutchinson and John Wheelwright fled to Rhode Island soon after Williams. In 1679 New Hampshire became a separate colony.
