Dynamics

A saw sam sai is a bow instrument made with coconuts, animal skin, and silk strings. This instrument is also known as the tree stringed fiddle. ("Classes: Traditional Thai Classical Instruments")

In the beginning of the piece the dynamics of the music gradually gets louder due to the addition of instruments. Also, the music itself is not loud or soft, so the piece is moderately loud.

This instrument is made of wood and brass string, and the sticks are made of flexible bamboo sticks with leather on the tips. The instrument is played by using the stick and striking the strings with them. ("Classes: Traditional Thai Classical Instruments")

Ja-khe

Ching and Chap

The melody of this piece has a combination of conjunct and disjunct melodies.(ex. 0:50-0:54) The example shows a spot in the music where there is a conjunct melody at first, then the music jumps into a disjunct melody. This melody is soothing, peaceful, and calming because it sounds like people would listen to this type of music when they are trying to fall asleep or at a spa.

The body of the ja-khe is made out of soft wood trees. The three string are made of silk yarn or nylon and brass. This instrument's shape replicates the shape of an alligator. Finally, the ja-khe is played like a side-ways guitar. ( "Classes: Traditional Thai Classical Instruments")

Ching and chap are like mini symbols. Ching is more of a bowl shaped symbol, where chap is flatter. This instrument is played by hitting ching and chap together, and making a sound. ("Classes: Traditional Thai Classical Instruments")

Culture in Thailand passes from generation to generation. This happens because the parents teaches their children how things are done, and the children follow, then eventually they will teach their children how things are done. People in Thailand are raised and taught in a specific way because the standards there are extremely high. People must be respectful and mannerly to everyone and at all times. (“Thailand- Thai Language, Culture, Customs and Etiquettes”) Also, holidays and festivals are celebrated annually, so the tradition will not end soon. (“Holidays and Festivals”)

Background Information

Khong mon

Ra-nat

The traditional music of Thailand has a complex rhythm to it because there are so different types of instruments playing at different times, yet it sounds like it blends perfectly together. There is a mix of long and short notes in this piece, which adds more complexity to it. Irregular and unequal rhythms occur in this music because the notes have different beats depending on the instrument that is played. There is a moderately slow beat that is throughout the music, it is not up-beat, but it is not a slow beat as well. The time signature is a duple meter.

The khong mon is a percussion instrument that is shaped like a horseshoe. Also, it is made out of wood. To play this instrument, someone must hit it, so it will make a sound. ("Classes: Traditional Thai Classical Instruments")

There are two different types of ra-nats, one is called ra-nat ek and the other is called ra-nat thum. The difference between the two ra-nats is that the rat-nat ek is longer (21-22 pieces) than the ra-nat thum (17-18 pieces). Ra-nats consist of pieces of wood and is like a xylophone. This instrument is shaped like a boat. To play it, a mallet is used to strike the pieces of wood. ("Classes: Traditional Thai Classical Instruments")
