On 11 June, 1944 Lt. Col. Cole personaly lead a bayonette charge against a fixed German position in order to capture bridgehead number three in his four bridge objective.
However brave the charge may have been it proved costly, 130 of Cole's 265 men were killed or wounded.
Lieutenant Colonel Cole served in the United States Army, in the 101st Airborne Division
Robert G. Cole was born at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas, to Colonel Clarence F. Cole, an Army doctor, and Clara H. Cole on March 19, 1915.
He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio in 1933 and joined the United States Army on July 1, 1934.
