Not much is said in the novel about Pheoby's physical appearance. She is probably about Janie's age, or she may be a little older.
"You mean, you mad 'cause she didn't stop and tell us all her business. Anyhow, what you ever know her to do so bad as y'all make out?" (Hurston 19)
"Lawd!" Pheoby breathed out heavily, "Ah done growed ten feet higher from jus' listenin' tuh you, Janie. Ah ain't satisfied wid mahself no mo'," (Pg.217)
"It made Pheoby think of Sam waiting for her and getting fretful. It made Janie think of that room upstairs - her bedroom. Pheoby hugged Janie real hard and cut the darkness in flight." (Hurston 218)
Pheoby is an incredibly good listener, as evidenced by her listening to Janie drone one about her existence beyond Eatonville. She has also been in Janie's life for many years.
"Well, then, we can set right where we is and talk. Ah got the house all opened up to let dis breeze git a little catchin'."
"Pheoby, we been kissin' friends for twenty years, so Ah depend on you for a good thought. And Ah'm talking to you from dat standpoint."
Pheoby listens to Janie's story, she is a very gossipy person. People see her as a person to tell things to. She is also known for being very understanding and not judging people. Which is one of the reasons why Janie told her story.
"Pheoby, we have been kissin' friends for twenty years, so ah depend on you for good thought."(Hurston 24).
