First Nations and Residential Schools in Canada

By KRisten

The purpose of Residential Schools was to teach children Christianity and to "civilize" them. They were created around the 1840's and weren't completely closed until 1996.

Aboriginal Elders wanted their young ones to learn the skills the European had and hoped education would help them adjust to the change the europeans brought with them.

Life at Residential Schools

  • Half of the day was spent in classes, the other half working so they could learn new skills.
  • Children were forced to attend religious events.
  • Early mornings, little recreation time, and early bed times.
