Group Observation Report

Conclusions

Pro's & Con's of Our Tool

Evan Butler, Meghan Hadfield, Stefani Hewak, Bianca de Kock, Stephanie Krulicki, Emily Nishibori

- The objective, scenario & legend is clear & concise

TALLY SYSTEM:

- space efficient, accurate, orderly

- difficult to use in real time

- does not "flow"

IMPROVEMENTS:

- axes could be switched: criteria on horizontal axis, subjects on vertical axis

- totaling the data

- alternating row colours improve flow

- SEATING CHART prevents duplicate data and may present correlations between the participation of the students and their place in the classroom/proximity to others

- More space for FIELD NOTES necessary - qualitative to supplement quantitative

  • Afterwards we found that students were more likely to volunteer as opposed to being 'voluntold' to speak.

  • Like we hypothesized, students were more talkative during pair group as opposed to in front of the class.

  • Students were in fact more active in talking when prompted by myself or Emily.

  • The majority of students were active in pair work, but when it came to the class discussion the number of students participating dropped significantly.

Prompts

During Class Discussion

Other Comments

  • The more active students during group discussion = not always more active during class discussion

  • Students' answers --> prompts

  • Silent students (mostly) remain silent

Conclusions

- Significant decrease in volunteers

What Were We Observing?

  • Several more interesting conclusions were noticed during the class discussion:
  • Student's answers prompted other student's to voice their opinions.
  • This created a discourse where students were engaged in the discussion.
  • We were pleasantly surprised that students were so active in voicing their opinions as we thought we would have to do much more 'voluntelling'

How often students volunteer to speak/answer questions versus how often students are "voluntold" to speak/answer questions.

Actively observing:

1. Pair/group work

2. Class discussion

Hypothesis:

  • Most likely to have more students "voluntold" to speak than volunteer
  • Students will be more talkative during pair work than class discussion
  • Students will be more active in participating after teacher prompts
  • Students that were most active during pair work will remain more active than their partners in class discussion
