Further Statistics Applications

Hypotheses Testing

Tampering

Another application of statistics in engineering is monitoring the outcomes of a certain process and trying to manipulate the results to one's desire through tampering.

Tampering in the context of a controlled process is adjusting the process on the basis of outcomes which are within the expected range of variability.

Empirical Models

The decision an engineer takes regarding which factor to change or what are the variables that need to be experimented are made using statistical hypotheses testing.

In order to formulate such tests, usually some theory has been put forward, either because it is believed to be true or because it is to be used as a basis for argument, but has not been proved.

An empirical statistical law or (in popular terminology) a law of statistics represents a type of behaviour that has been found across a number of datasets and, indeed, across a range of types of data sets.

Probability

Probability is a measure of the likeliness that an event will occur.

Probability is used to quantify an attitude of mind towards some proposition of whose truth we are not certain.

Probability Applications

Probability study is very important to engineers for it examines how likely events could happen and so the risks could be determined and resolved professionally. Another significant application of probability theory in everyday life is reliability. Many consumer products, such as automobiles and consumer electronics, use reliability theory in product design to reduce the probability of failure.

Engineering and Statistics

Regression Analysis

In statistics, regression analysis is a statistical process for estimating the relationships among variables. It includes many techniques for modeling and analyzing several variables, when the focus is on the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables.

Statistics and Engineering

After having studied engineering related statics an engineer could be able to use it in:

1- Designing of experiments

2- Quality and process control

3- Probabilistic Design

4- Reliability Engineering etc.

The field of statistics deals with the collection, presentation, analysis and use of data to make decisions, solve problems and design products and processes.

Engineers solve problems constantly and repetitively that's why the need of statistics in the Engineering domain is of a huge value.

Applications of Statistics in Engineering

Designed Experiments are one of the most important statistics applications in the field of engineering.

In a designed experiment the engineer makes changes in the controllable

variables of process, observes the resulting system output data, and then

makes a decision about which variables are responsible for the observed changes

in output performance.
