Who to be safe during a tornado

If you are under a tornado warning, seek shelter immediately! Most injuries associated with high winds are from flying debris, so remember to protect your head. Then: Go to a pre-designated area such as a safe room, basement, storm cellar, or the lowest building level.

how are tornadoes are formed

They are usually the extreme result of a super cell thunderstorm. During the storm cold air and warm air combine in a set pattern: the cold air drops as the warm air rises. The warm air eventually twists into a spiral and forms the funnel cloud that we all associate with a tornado.Sep 18, 2016

Why do tornadoes spin

In the northern hemisphere, tornadoes occasionally rotate clockwise, or anti-cyclonic ally. These tornadoes tend to be water spouts, non-super cell land tornadoes, or anti-cyclonic whirls around the rim of a super cell's mesozoic.

WHERE CAN TORNADOES BE FOUND

Most tornadoes are found in the Great Plains of the central United States – an ideal environment for the formation of severe thunderstorms. In this area, known as Tornado Alley

Storms are caused when dry cold air moving south from Canada meets warm moist air traveling north from the Gulf of Mexico.

HOW FAST CAN A TORNADO SPIN

The most extreme tornadoes can attain wind speeds of more than 300 miles per hour (480 km/h)

Most tornadoes travel from the southwest to northeast with an average speed of 30 mph
