  • "Mayella stared at him and burst into tears. She covered her mouth with her hands and sobbed"(240 ).
  • This quote is happening during the trial of Tom Robinson in the courthouse. Mayella is afraid of Atticus, Tom's lawyer. She is insecure because she could have had confidence.

Purpose

Mayella was the one who caused problems throughout the book and had an ugly life. She was the one who made Tom Robinson go to jail for rape even though he really didn't rape her. One of the most important conflicts in the book was when the trial happens.
