Flamingo Research

The order is Pheonicopteriformes.

Characteristics:

The domain is: Eukarya.

The kingdom is: animalia.

Here are some characteristics like the height, weight, wingspan and etc:

The greater flamingo is the tallest flamingo standing at 120 to 150 centimeters and weighing up to 3.5 kg and 7.7 lb. The wingspan of flamingos range from 95 to 100 cm. On the lesser flamingo it is 140 to 165 cm. The Caribbean flamingo has a wingspan of 150 cm.

The phylum is: Chordata.

The class is: aves (birds).

The family is: Phoenicopteridae.

Now for some facts about the flamingo to end it up:

The genus is: Phoenicopterus.

Where the flamingos could be found:

1. Adult flamingos are 4 to 5 feet tall but weigh between 4 to 8 pounds. That is so interesting that the bigger they get the lighter they are.

2. A variety of land predators eat flamingos and there eggs, but since they built there nests on swamplands or mudflats, the common predator would be other birds eating the flamingos.

3. Flamingos are not endangered so, they are classified as "Least concern".

4. Plastic lawn flamingos, are an american cultural icon that was introduced in 1957 by an artist Don Featherstone. In the 21 century, they are considered endangered. In 2009 Madison Wisconsin named the plastic pink flamingo the city's official bird.

The Flamingos legs:

If your wondering where the flamingos could be found well, The flamingos live in South America and the greater and lesser flamingos live in Africa. Greater flamingos can also be found in the Middle East and India. Flamingos are water birds, so they live in lagoons and or lakes. They are usually found in tropical and subtropical climates. The flamingos needs a habitat that has shallow water so that they can eat. Many species of flamingos thrive in captivity. The flamingo feeds standing up so the water cannot be to high. Flamingos can also live in cold or warm areas which they are fine with.

Here are some unique and interesting stuff about flamingos:

Flamingos frequently stand on one leg. The reason for this behavior is not fully known why they stand on one leg. One common theory is that tucking one leg beneath the body may conserve heat, but this has not been proved. Flamingos have webbed feet and they stamp their webbed feet in the mud to stir up food from the bottom. Flamingos legs are longer than their bodies. They are between 31 and 49 inches long depending on the species of the flamingo.

The Flamingos Food

Flamingos have 12 to 16 tail feathers. The contour feathers help the skin so it won't get damaged. Did u know that flamingos most, shed and replace their wings and body feathers ranging from twice a year to ounce every two years. Flamingos are the most interesting animals in the world. Flamingos aren't seen flying as much but they do fly because they are birds. Sometimes flamingos can be orange too. These creatures are lovely but seem calm. As u may not know but many people don't know that flamingos can fly and they can also run rapidly 35 miles per hour. They can fly for many, many, MANY miles to survive and look for safety.

Here are somethings that help the flamingo survive in the wild:

Coloration:

The flamingo has a unique beak with a unique design. It allows them to easily consume the foods found in their diet. In the wild flamingos eat blue, red and green algae, brine shrimp, aquatic plants, diatoms, and small fishes make up the main diet for the flamingos. An aquatic plant is a plant that is usually near watery areas such as lakes, rivers and etc. There mostly are aquatic plants in salt water or fresh water. The flamingo would search for food in shallow water. Did u know that flamingos produce milk? Well they do. The flamingo produces milk like pigeons due to the action of a hormone called prolactin. The milk contains more fat and less protein. Both of the flamingo parents would nurse their flamingo, and young flamingos feed on this milk, which also contains red and white blood cells. They would nurse their flamingo for about two mounts until their bills are developed enough to filter feed. Did u know that flamingos are born gray but as they grow older they attend to eat shrimp which makes their skin change color in to pink? When the flamingos parents give the baby flamingo milk, your probably thinking that they produce white milk but, actually they produce milk with red and white blood cells, which means the milk is red (like blood). When they produce milk it comes straight from the mouth. How odd.

Flamingos use their curved beaks to eat food. They scoop up the food with their beaks and they shake their head from side to side. This process forces the mud from their beaks out, leaving the shrimp to be swallowed. This adaptation helps the flamingo survive because the flamingos beak helps them grab food and it will keep them healthy. This process is called Filter Feed. Another cool thing that helps these birds survive is flamingos can fly because their birds. If a predator like other vertebrates are after the flamingo, it can run away because they run up to 35 Miles per hour or they can fly away peacefully. These birds are really unique and are interesting vertebrates.

The flamingos colors go from pale pink to Crimson or vermillion. Caribbean flamingos have the brightest coloration: which is Crimson and or vermillion. The Chilean flamingo is pale pink. Did u know that male and female coloration is the same. Newly hatched flamingos are gray and or white. Parent flamingos lose some of their pink coloration while raising young flamingos. The coloration of the feet and legs are the same. There are 12 principal flight feathers located on each wing. These black feathers are visible when the wings are extended. A flamingo has a flexible neck. The eyes are located on either side of the head. Baby flamingos have grey eyes for approximately the first year of life. Adult flamingos have yellow eyes.

Species:

Did You Know?

That scientists have discovered that flamingos are slowly vanishing along the Rift Valley lakes of Kenya and Tanzania. There is more pollution than there is water. The flamingos are dying of pollution like metal pollution and etc. They are also dying of poisonous bacteria. Water levels have been lowered and soda in the water has increased. This increases the risk of toxic bacteria growing there.

There are 6 different species for the flamingo?

The species are:

1. The Greater Flamingo

2. The Lesser Flamingo

3. The Chilean Flamingo

4. The James Flamingo

5. The Andean Flamingo

6. The Caribbean Flamingo

The Environment of the Flamingo:

Flamingos live in warm climates and or cold climates and inhabit the edges of lakes and swamps where they can eat shrimp, algae, and other small creatures that live in shallow water.
