In order to become a part of the Latin Kings you must fit into a certain criteria. Most members are of Latino/Hispanic decent. There are members that are from different backgrounds but it is very difficult for them to move up the ranks. Many Latin kings are born into the gang life, but others are initiated and have to pass some tests before they can become a part of the Latin King and Queen Nation. This test includes being beat up by twenty or so members of the gang and if you survive the beating it means you can survive gang life, this was called a violation. As an early member of the gang you must complete tasks and missions to prove your loyalty. An example of a task would be transporting drugs or weapons and another more extreme example would be killing someone who has been disloyal to the Kings. For women, to become part of the Queens, there isn’t a specific known process, but instead most are either girlfriends, wives, sisters, or mothers of gang members. They do ,however, complete task and take part in gang related activity such as : carrying weapons, transporting drugs, and act as alibis. The Latin Queen nation also recruits women who have had troubled lives like problems with addiction or women who have suffered abuse and have actually had a positive impact.

The Latin Kings operate as a hierarchy, the highest position being the “Corona,” which is the head of the whole gang and is in a way revered or worshipped. The current Corona is “Lord Gino.” The next position is “Supreme Inca,” which is the leader of a particular chapter or tribe, they control most of the street crime. The lower level members don’t have a specific title and are simply referred to as the nation. The female members are called the Latin Queens.
The founder of the Almighty Latin Kings, “Papa King,” was killed by the orders of his own gang members and successors, “Baby King” and “Lord Gino,” whom he had met in jail right before he died. “Baby King” or Raul Gonzalez, the leader of the South side Latin kings, and “Lord Gino” Gustavo Gino Colon, leader of North side Latin Kings, were incarcerated in 1972 for RICO charges because of their involvement in many major crimes and organized criminal activity. In 1986 Luis Felipe or “King Blood,” started the New York chapter of the Latin Kings.

Early versions of the gang have roots starting in New York as early as the 1920’s, but the original Latin Kings were created in Chicago in the 1940’s. The gang was founded by “Papa King” or “Papa Santos” and his partners: Jose Rivera or “Cadillac Joe”, Eddie Rodriguez or “Tiger”, Joe Gunn, and “Fast Eddie.”
The gang started as a movement for hispanic prisoners rights, and as a way to keep the hispanic heritage alive, but soon became active in the drug trade. One of the first areas that the kings had control of was Humboldt park.
The original gang was formed as a social group, in order to help protect latinos from being discriminated against, but heroin came into the picture and changed everything. Chicago was home to one the original large-scale gangs, The Chicago Outfit, led by Al (scarface) Capone and it also became home to the Latin kings. Capone’s gang dealt with alcohol during the prohibition but the Latin Kings control drugs in the city of Chicago. The reason behind illegal activity might have changed over time but both gangs are involved in murders, prostitution, and making large amounts of money through illegal activities.
