Mission !

To teach the differences between restrictive and non-restrictive elements. Also, to show where to proper place commas in a sentence.

The "elements" are

noun modifiers: relative clauses (starting with who, which, that); participles (e.g. "barking in the night"); and nouns used as "appositives" ("Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President, guided his country....")

"Restrictive" Element

A word, phrase, or dependent clause that limits (or restricts) the meaning of the element it modifies while providing information essential to the meaning of the sentence.

Because the restrictive element is vitally linked to the word or phrase it modifies, the two cannot be separated by commas.

"Non-Restrictive" Element

Provides added and often interesting information about its referent but does not essentially define it. The non-restrictive element is set off from the rest of the sentence by commas as indication it could be removed without destroying the sentence's meaning.
