Knapp's relationship model was created in 1992 and explains how relationships begin, grow, and end. The model is organized in ten different stages that are categorzied under two stages, coming together and coming apart.
As a relationship advances, there will be misunderstandings and conflicts and the relationship might fail. Like coming together, there are 5 stages in coming apart.
There are 5 stages people go through in a relationship. These stages, include initiating, experimenting, intensifying, and integrating.
In this stage, they start to think individually rather than together.
In this stage, its about making first impressions.
In this stage, they get to know each other more deeply. They will analyze each other's information and common interests.
In this stage, they will set up boundaries in communication and they will decrease their conversations.
In this stage, it's where the relationship becomes exclusive and less formal. They start revealing personal information and express their feelings for other.
In this stage, the communication will be more limit. Most of the relationships will not continue or improve at this stage.
In this stage, they purposely avoid contact and will be physically detached.
In this stage, the are viewed as a couple by society and they become dependent on each other for emotional comfort and support.
In this stage, they announce their relationship to the world. They make an offical commitment to each other.
In this stage, the relationship comes apart and ends. They will take different paths and go on with their lives.
