Romanian Customs and Traditions

Summer Traditions

The most well-known holiday in the summer

season, and perhaps the most important, is

Sanzienele.

Sanzienele

This holiday, which is celebrated on 24th June, is a day of love an fertility. On this day, some rituals -for health, riches but also for finding out who is your soul mate and when you are going to marry him- are made. This holiday is one of faith.

Easter

The Old Women (Babele)

The Easter is the most important celebration of the Romanian people and it is preceded by numerous preparations and rituals.

This holiday lasts for 3 days on which people visit each other and have the traditional lunch together.

Because it’s a good thing to have a new piece of clothing on the Easter, people go to shopping one or two weeks in advance.

Autumn Traditions

This holiday lasts for 9 days and each and every one corresponds to the "journey" the old woman Dochia made. The legend says that she went with her sheep to the mountain and as she was climbing it, she was taking off her nine sheepskin coats. Her very last sheepskin coat is thought to be the boundary between winter and spring.

People are supposed to choose one day (1-9 March) and their year will be as that day was.

Winter Traditions

There is no doubt that "The Night of the Ghosts" is the most important holiday from autumn season.

On the night between 29th and 30th October, when it is also "The Night of Saint Andrew", people defend their houses by the evil ghosts with garlic. They also make campfires and a lot of loud noises so as to scare these entities.

As in many other cultures, Romania celebrates the Christmas and the New Year in the winter season.

Of course that there are some differences: this nation has different traditions such as The Star, The Goat and The Semanatul.

The Star

This custom basically consists of going from house to house and announcing the birth of the Jesus by caroling with a hand-made star in the hand.

The Goat

This custom takes place on the New Year`s Eve. Children dressed in decorated goats announce the New Year`s coming by singing and dancing.

The Day of Martisor

The origins of this holiday is unknown but it is believed that it appeared when the Ottoman Empire was in the lead. Back then the begging of a new year was celebrated on this day, but now people offer each other a "martisor" as a sign that spring came.

Conclusion

The Semanatul

There are plenty of traditions and customs in Romania which celebrate various occasions and beliefs.

This custom tales place on 1st January. Children, and not only, go from house to house to wish a prosperous to the others. While they say the wish, they throw rice, which is thought to bring prosperity.
