This study supports the principle that states that researching animals can improve our understanding of human behavior as well. By studying rats, the scientists were able to apply their results to the human brain and determine that the same results would occur in humans.
The anatomy of the brain was different in the EC and IC rats. The thickness and weight of the cortex in EC rats was higher than that of IC rats. EC rats were more active overall than the IC rats. That activity is associated with the transmission of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that boosts learning and memory.
The rats were picked randomly and not based off of ability, or lack thereof. They were killed humanely for research purposes only and the information collected from the research proved to be extremely helpful.

In this case study of 1972 , Rosenzweig and Bennett explored the correlation between adding stimuli to the environment of an organism and physical changes in the brain. Over the span of 30 to 60 days, rats in the enriched environment engaged in activity with stimuli, while rats in the impoverished condition were void of toys. In conclusion, the researchers observed the significant changes in the EC rats brains'.
Aims: To investigate if new neurons in the cerebral cortex can develop from different environmental conditions, such as wealthy or impoverished conditions.
Independent Variable: The environment in which the groups of rats were placed in for 1-2 months
Dependent Variable: The weight of the rats brains. This showed the ability of the rats' brains to change shape.
Method: Lab Case Study. The rats were observed for a period of time in a lab setting. Different aspects of the rats' behaviors were recorded.
