Macbeth: Act 1 Scene 2
Question: What would the marxist critic say about
all of the different ranks of people in this scene?
Answer: The marxist critic would say a few things about this
scene. First they would observe the fact that the King just comes
up after the battle and does not even fight just gets a report after.
The more money you had in this time, the more important you
were considered to be and in this case the King is considered a God.
They would also look at the fact that to reward Macbeth for his triumphs
on the battle field the King gives him a new thane position, in fact the
position of the man who was a traitor. It is considered a great honor to
move up in ranks.
Question: What would the cultural critic say about
the two different countries in this scene and the ways
of war at the time?
Answer: The cultural critic would look at this and first note how
the Scots are the colonizer and Norway is the colonized after the
Scots win the war and then demand $10,000 for Norway to come
collect their dead. They would also look at the fact that there were
traitors from within Scotland, and how big of an offense this was.
This idea is a major theme of the play, the idea of being loyal to friends,
family, and your country and the idea of greed getting in the way of it.
Quotes to Note: What do these quotes mean and
why are they important?
"For brave Macbeth (well deserves that name), disdaining fortune,
with bloody execution, like valor's minion, carved out his passage" (I.i.18-21)
This quote is the first time we hear about Macbeth's personality and get a taste
of what he is like. From this quote we can tell that Macbeth is thought highly of
and is an extremly good warrior. It could also be taken as he is merciless and
malicious.
"Till he unseemed him from the nave to th' chops" (I.i.24)
This quote means that Macbeth sliced open Macdonwald from his stomach to
his chin. He then chopped off his head. This shows more about Macbeth's
personality in the fact that he did not simply just kill Macdonwald, he destroyed
him and made him suffer before even killing him. He is also extremly brave and a
good warrior to be able to do this.
Make a Connection:
In this scene the soldier who re accounts
everything that happened is badly wounded
but before he is even helped or looked at must
tell the king what went on. Watch this scene
from the movie Robin Hood and the Prince of
Thieves to see how it connects to this idea and
scene from Macbeth.
The servant who lives with Robin Hood
had his eyes taken out and is left to die
which he would have had Robin Hood
not returned. Once home, Robin Hood
even at first blames him for what happened
and then presses for information before even
beginning to think of how to help him much
like the solider in Macbeth. It also shows how
there was really nothing to be done once someone
was injured at the time, all they do is simply cover
his eyes with a bandage.
Macbeth is described as a great and
merciless warrior. Watch this scene
from the Lord of the Rings: The Return
of the King and see how the hero Aragon
connects to Macbeth.
The hero, Aragon, does not want to hear what
this person from the enemy has to say and shows
this by the way he just simply goes up and kills him
one on one. He is also brave and a good warrior which is shown in the scene.

Summary: The King of Scotland, Duncan, comes to the battle field after the fight is over and hears about two of the star fighters Macbeth and Banquo. He also hears about how Macbeth killed the traitor and enemy Macdonwald. When he also learns that one of his thanes (like a governor today) has committed treason, he decides to give his title to Macbeth.
