During Imperialism

The British were the country that took over Nigeria. They used their weapons and their dominance to gain control of this area. The British also added two-thirds of British Cameroon which also became a part of Nigeria.

There was both good and bad about the imperialism of Nigeria. The good was that because of this Nigeria started becoming westernized and it later helped them become a better country. The bad would be this took away all the independence of the towns and the people and also injured many of them in the process.

Nigeria: Before

At this time the economy was basically nonexistent. The tribes were surviving by trading and hunting for their families. In 1950 the population of Nigeria was around 30,000 people. At this time the beliefs in Nigeria was mainly Islam while some other tribes had other religions. Culture in this time was also very traditional. The government in Nigeria did not exist as a unified state so there wasn't any government. The villages and towns in this area were sometimes run by by a group of elders who were highly respected.

After Imperialism

Now Nigeria has an estimated 165,000 people and around 250 different ethnic groups. The three main ones are Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo. The official language is English while there is no official religion 50% are muslim and 40% are christian. Now that Nigeria is independent they run as a federal republic. This is a federation of states with a democratic form of government.
