Strong & Determined.

Suffers Greatly.

Joey suffers greatly when he is pulling the heavy gun for the German army. He witnesses the deterioration and death of his fellow horses and worries greatly about the health of Topthorn. The weather is deplorable, the horses are under fed and the men are either cruel or indifferent to them. The one exception is Friedrich.

Joey’s strength and determination can be seen in his miraculous recovery from tetanus. Major Martin felt it was best to have the horse put down but, with Albert’s intervention, a strict regime was established to try and save the horse.

“His devotion, his unwavering faith that I would indeed recover, gave me the heart to go.”

He did survive against all odds and he returned home to the English countryside with his beloved Albert by his side.

Affectionate & Loving.

Impressive.

He is obviously a very impressive looking horse. As soon as Captain Nicholls sees him he decides that he will be his mount in the regiment. He is fascinated by Joeys appearance and draws many sketches of him, one of which he sends to Albert.

The affection Joey feels for Albert is coupled with the love he feels for Emilie. He notices her absence the evening she falls ill. He enjoys spending the summer in the fields and farmyard helping her and her grandfather. When the German battalion comes to take the horses away Joey feels the same anguish he felt when Mr. Narracott bought him and he was separated from his mother.

Friendly & Supportive.

Joey finds a stable companion in Topthorn. They support each other through the difficulties of being a cavalry horse,

“…without Topthorn I think I should never have become accustomed to the guns….”

He admits that it was a powerful sense of compassion and love which led him to stay by the body of Topthorn in dangerous circumstances.

Loyal.

Joey is a very loyal companion for Albert. He always answers his whistle and works hard to try to master the art of ploughing, even though it is not what he was bred to do.

“For her sake and for my own sake, for Albert’s too, I leant my weight into my collar and began to pull.”

Joey is half thoroughbred and is really more suitable to racing or show jumping.

Character of Joey.

Narrator.

Joey is our protagonist and as with any good narrator, Joey makes us feel like we're riding along with him during the war, seeing things through his eyes. But because he doesn't offer much commentary on the horrific things he witnesses, we're allowed to draw our own conclusions.
