Chemical Reaction Collage

S-Solid (Silver Nitrate and Sodium Chloride

A- Aroma (Skunk)

T-Temperature (Cool reaction)

Silver Nitrate and Sodium chloride are two liquids. When combined they create a solid. Silver Nitrate is a chemical that does not dissolve in water. Which is why when the two react they create a white solid.

When a skunk skunks spray they release a bad aroma. Underneath the skunks tail they are two glands that produce a bad smelling oily spray. The spray is a thiol which is a strong smelling organic sulfur compound.

10 mg of Ammonium Thiocynate and 20 mg of Barium hydroxide are mixed together. The two are both grainy solids. When they are combined the temperature drops. You would think they would freeze, but they melt each other into a liquid, and the new liquid gains heat.

F-Fizz (Alka Seltzer)

C-Color (Stop N' Go Light)

A-Aroma (Bath Bomb)

In the Alka Seltzer lab we put water, and vegetable oil in plastic water bottle, then added a few drops of food coloring. The water and oil did not mix. We dropped small pieces of an Alka Seltzer tablet in the water and oil. Since the water was on the bottom of the bottle the Alka Seltzer fell to the bottom.

The tablet reacted with the water and caused a fizz. The fizz created colored bubbles in the oil. The evidence of a chemical reaction was the fizzing in the water, then into the water.

In this demo a liquid in a large flask was shaken. The liquid changed colors from red to orange to green. This occured because when the liquid was shaken the bonds withing the liquid break allowing for the transfer of electrons. Oxidation occure which is the losing of electrons. The transfer of electrons makes it different than the first time causing the color shift. This was an acid base indicator because of the change in color.

The bath bomb can also be used here. The carbon dioxide created in the chemical reaction evaporates in bubbles that helps the bath bomb break up. This process helps the perfumes, oils, and more that are what is left of the bomb mix with the water, causing the pleasant scents.

S-New Substance (Acetone and Styrofoam)

F-Fizz (Bath bomb in water)

When the Styrofoam cup is placed in the acetone it melts. The acetone lets the long chains inside the Styrofoam move around each other which releases air bubbles. When the liquid in the melted Styrofoam it becomes a goo like plastic eventually back into a hard plastic.

C-Color (Chameleon chemical reaction)

T-Temperature (fever)

S- Solid (Sodium Iodine and Silver Nitrate

Bath bombs have

sodium bicarbonate and citric acid in them. They are uncreative when dry, but once dropped in the water the citric acid react with the sodium bicarbonate. When the two reacts it causes the bomb to cause a fizz in the water surrounding it.

A fever is caused by chemicals called pyrogens in the blood stream. Pyrogens make their way to the hypothalamus which is the center for regulating body temperature in the brain. When pyrogens meet with certain receptors in the hypothalamus part of the brain body temp rises. A common pyrogen is Interleukin-1 (IL-1) and is produced by macrophages when they come in contact with bacteria and viruses.

Silver Nitrate and Sodium Iodine combine to from a solid. They will create silver Iodine. Silver nitrate is colorless and Sodium Iodine is a light yellow color.

The chameleon chemical reaction is an redox reaction. In the reaction the chemicals in the coloring react with eachoter. Taking electrons from the other chemical. The chemicals get reduced because of the stolen electrons.
