Health Care vs

Universal Health

Why Is American Health Care So Expensive?

Health Care

Universal Health Care

Why is the United States so against UHC?

  • Universal Health Care is a service provided by the government that allows for everyone to receive quality medical help regardless

of their financial situation

  • The act of taking preventative or necessary medical procedures to improve a person's health. This may be done with surgery, administering medicine, or other alterations in a person's lifestyle. These services are typically offered through a health care system made up of hospitals and physicians.

  • High Administrative Costs
  • Overpriced Prescription Drugs
  • Expensive Testing and Treatment Methods
  • Higher wages for Doctors, and Nurses
  • Costs of "Defensive" Medicine
  • The United States is one of the only democratic countries to not have UHC.
  • Reasons why: Many people don't want this concept. They believe its against their beliefs. The interest groups are also completely against universal care.

Statistics

Our goal today is to propose that healthcare should be free and available to everyone. Why should someone be denied their right to healthcare just because they are not loaded down with money. Health Care is a basic human right, and everyone should be given it.

  • The American healthcare industry was worth $24.7 billion in 1960. It is now worth $3,504 trillion.
  • The United States could save $175 billion in healthcare costs by halving administrative costs.
  • 1.4 million Americans went overseas for medical care in 2017 to get a better deal.
  • In past years it was illegal to not have health insurance.
  • In fact, the number of uninsured Americans has dropped from 48.6 million in 2010 to 29.3 million in 2017.

Why Is Universal Health Care (UHC) Important?

Cons

Pros

  • Forces hospitals and doctors to provide the same standard of service at a lower cost
  • Lowers health care costs for the economy
  • Affordable medical bills
  • Getting access to health care is a human right
  • People won't go bankrupt from medical bills
  • UHC creates a healthier workforce
  • Governments can impose regulations and taxes to guide the population toward healthier choices
  • People may not be as careful with their health without the fear of a large medical bill
  • Doctors potentially have less of an incentive to provide quality care if they aren't paid well
  • Limits the service for people who are in need of help.
  • Long waiting times. If people aren't scared off by the threat of going into debt by receiving medical attention, more people will generally go to the hospital instead of waiting until their need is absolutely dire.

  • In some instances it very well may be a life or death situation.
  • Individuals who do not health insurance can be turned away just because they cannot afford a basic service that costs thousands of dollars
  • Using this system can make or break financial survival or destruction for some people
  • UHC benefits a country in the long run seeing as increased coverage with health services has been shown to improve health indicators and contribute to a stronger economic development, including the reduction of poverty levels.
