Current Conditions

15 million children under the age of 14 are

currently working in Nigeria. They are exposed

to dangerous environments. They have little food

and don't make very much, while missing out

on their education. The majority of them

sell items on the streets, while others

wash cars, shine shoes, etc. Some are iron

or metal workers or carpenters. Many

are abused and harassed.

History

Enacted Laws

Children as young as four were said to

have worked in dangerous factories and in horrible working conditions. The children were forced to work in the cocoa industry while it was booming. They usually did very light chores around the house and easy farm work.

A law has been set so that there is a mini-

mum age limit to children working at seas,

underground or in the industry setting.

Another was set to prevent abuse and harassment. One was enacted to make

sure that children in orphanages have

their basic rights. Children under 12

are prohibited from heavy lifting,

carrying, etc.
