Kira tells Thomas that Jo does not know that her mother is dead
Thomas comes from the window and Kira tells him about how she had gone to the secret room that morning, and had met the singing tyke, called Jo. Kira explains how the door was locked, "but they've never locked my door, Thomas".
Thomas then starts talking to Kira about the mischief he used to do when he was brought in to Council Edifice, "still Tom".
The next morning, Kira notices a 'dyeing-place' set up for her. This makes her remember Annabella, and she says 'I'm going to miss her'.
Jamison meets Kira and tells her of the events the day before, 'a sudden death'.
Kira asks if she could "go and sit with [Annabella]", but Jamison does not allow her to, as the Gathering was getting closer.
But Kira wonders how they got to know 'where to look' and 'who found her[Annabella]'.
Kira approaches the door of the secret room, and softly knocks, but she "hears no sound from the inside".
When she hears Jo moving towards the door, she console s her and assures her that she was her friend, and promises to come back with help.
Kira searches for Jamison in Council Edifice and tries to assure herself that she was 'not in danger'.
While looking for Jamison, she comes to one door, where the tender at work tells her that Jamison might be in 'the wing' where her own quarters were.
Kira gets started to search for Jamison, but instead detours to the 'corner where she and Thomas had hidden the day before'.
That was where the child's crying had been heard from.
Kira knew she was not supposed to be there but she resisted anyway and was curious to find out the reality.
Matt tells Kira that 'draggers tooken [Annabella]', surprising Kira.
Kira is dumbfounded and has no idea where to go, so she starts to look for Jamison and asks Matt to give Thomas this news.
Matt again gives Kira news that Jamison was there when the 'draggers tooken the old dyer to the Field'.
