Example 1

Example 2

It fits the genre because Utopia means a perfect world. In Bradbury's story he was basically trying to be in a perfect world. The students need to imagine life and see how happy they'd be. That shows Dystopia. They also are excited when the sun came out and that's a perfect world.

• The text contains a clear claim (main idea) about how the story fits the genre.

• The story provides more than one specific quality of how the story fits the genre.

• The text contains more than one piece of textual evidence with citation that supports the claim.

• The text contains a clear and accurate explanation of the evidence.

• The text contains a thorough link or connection between the evidence and the claim to explain why the evidence is proof of the claim.

Bradbury's story fits the genre of Utopia and Dystopia because in the story there's a different society from our society. For example, in the text it states "It has been raining for seven years; A Thousand forests had been crushed under the rain and grown up a thousand times to be crushed again. And this was the way life was forever on the planet Venus." The text explains that they live on Venus and they don't get any sun so all they get for 7 years is rain. To connect that with Earth, Earth gets sun quite often in just one year, unlike Bradbury's story. That's what makes his story a Utopia and Dystopia.

Scoring Example 1

1 - Basic

  • The writer can define aspects of the genre
  • The writer tries to show an example, but isn't specific enough

The writer should include direct specific evidence, and then make a clear connection between this evidence and the text. Stay focused!

Focus on:

SHOW ME,

DON'T TELL ME

Scoring Example 2

Scoring Example 4

3 - Proficient

  • Made a clear claim
  • Gave a specific example and explanation
  • Could have been more clear on how the evidence is an example of the Utopia/Dystopia

Objective: Students will be able to

2 - 3 - Proficient

  • Writer makes a claim
  • Writer provides evidence
  • Writer connected the evidence back to the claim

Revisions - more explanation! Why does Margot remembering Earth mean anyone is jealous of her.

identify figurative language in a text and analyze for the effects on the text as a whole.

#2 Why is Margot mistreated by the other kids?

Example 4

Summary of "All Summer in a Day"

The story takes place on Venus where it rains for 7 years straight with only 2 hours of sunshine in between.

Margot is from Earth and remembers the sun, so other kids are jealous of her.

She is from Earth and she remembers how the sun is/feels. In the text is says, "They hated her pale snow face, her waiting silence, her thinness, and he possible future." The other students are jealous of Margot.

Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Example 3

Scoring Example 3

"All Summer in a Day"

Margot is mistreated by the other kids because they are jealous because Margot actually knows what the sun looks like. For Example, Margot remembered, "'It's like a penny," she said once, eyes closed. 'No it's not!' the children cried. "It's like fire," she said, "in the stove." "You're lying, you don't remember!" cried the children." This shows Margot remembered and knows hows the sun looks and feels, but they don't believe her. It matters because the kids never experience the sun like Margot did on Earth.

4 - Excellent

  • Writer gives multiple examples
  • Writer explains the evidence
  • Writer makes a clear connection back to the claim

To improve, the writer could break up the evidence with explanation in between and be more specific about how the example means the kids are jealous.
