Distribution & Ecology

The Cape Hope Squid is occured in coastal South African waters, and they live from sea level to depths of 200 metres. They have a cosmopolitan distribution around the world's oceans. The South African squid is an important predator of small fishes, usually used for fish bait. It forms dense breeding aggregations in bays between Cape Point and Port Elizabeth. This species is extensively exploited by commercial fisheries and their natural predators include, short tail stingrays, diamond rays, cat shark, etc.

Biology

It spawns primarily during September to December on sand beds on shallow bays along the south Coast of Africa. Their size maturity could vary all depending on the location and time of year. Males may be mature at 9 centimeters and females mature at about 10-11 centimeters. Individual squids could spawn over a period of weeks or months.

Description

The Chokka has a slender body with 8 short arms and two very long retractile tentacles, which attached to them are suckers. It's eyes are also covered with a membrane which is a part of the skin, covering the head. They also have a relatively long diamond-shaped fins, which run more than half the length of the mantle. The mantle is up to 40 centimeters long.
