Syntax In Poetry

By: Spencer Heinitsh

Analysis

Aquemini - Outkast

Analysis

-Spoken word feel vs. rap feel

-Doesn't follow specific flow

-Flow keeps you on the edge

-Structure is a little more choppy, and experimental

-Flow is not repetitive

-Can't really guess what the next line will sound like

-Doesn't perfectly blend in with the beat, makes his own flow

Blessings - Chance The Rapper

-Flow blends with beat perfectly

-The same rhyme scheme is maintained throughout the whole verse

-Not choppy, every syllable fits in place in an anticipated way

-Much more rhythmic than spoken word

STANZA 2

Why can’t I say what happened?

I’m trying to—but I’ve been instructed

not to move, not even a millimeter,

or the radiation will reach my heart.

Whistle What Can't Be Said

STANZA 1

Conclusion

During radiation nothing gives—

all the steel and glass and plaster.

The machine closer and closer

until it’s an inch from the absent breast—

STANZA 3

All I want is to hear my neighbor

call his cows home at dusk, to see him

touch their bellies, feel the fur

that swirls between their eyes.

Syntax is one of the most important elements of poems and music, and the different structures of it are limitless. It determines the way the listener takes in the words that are being said. Syntax helps the words become alive and can help establish what the words are trying to express.
