"Ad Lazarum"

History

Ad Lazarum is named after Lazarus , a beggar in a New Testament Parable who receives his award in the afterlife. This is popularly exploited as the statement "poor, but honest". The opposite is the argumentum Ad Crumenam.

Explanation of fallacy

Ad Crumenam, and Ad Lazarum are opposites but are so closely related that they are presented together. The latin term for Appeal to Poverty is argumentum Ad Lazarum and the latin term for Appeal to money is argumentum Ad Crumenam. The fallacy of an appeal to poverty occurs whenever someone attempts to base a conclusion on how poor a person or thing is.

Introduction

Overview

Ad Lazarum is the informal fallacy of thinking a conclusion is correct because the speaker is poor, or its incorrect because the speaker is rich.

The fallacy of supposing a conclusion is valid because the argument is made by a poor person. It should be said that the poor aren't necessarily good and that the rich aren't necessarily evil.
