  • Ironically, Cocaine was used to "cure" addiction to alcohol and morphine.
  • Between 1887 and 1898 Cocaine and Heroine were seen as "miracle drugs" and were sold over the counter as cough suppressants.

Asa Candler was originally a pharmacist but made a fortune after buying the recipe of Coca-Cola from John Pemberton (original founder).

Pemberton's recipe called for 5 ounces of coca leaf and had 9 milligrams of cocaine and was intended to be a tonic.

The 1960's was a long decade of constant drug abuse.

LSD became widely popular at the beginning of the 60's leading to an increase in harder drugs such as cocaine, heroine and speed (amphetamine) by the late 1960's

  • Morphine was first discovered by Friedrich Sertürner in 1804.
  • It wasn't until 1861 during the American Civil War morphine was given to wounded soldiers
  • Addiction then rooted itself in vulnerable soldier and became known as the "army disease."

The Narcotic Control Act was an act put in place in 1956 by the government in response to an increase in narcotic trafficking and addiction.

Morphine:

A narcotic drug obtained from opium and used medicinally to relieve pain.

Nixon's War on Drugs in 1971 was an attempt to reduce the production and distribution of drugs.

Nixon famously delacred drugs as "public enemy number one"

As of 1970 26 million Americans used cocaine on a regular basis

Because of this act the fine for abusing any narcotics jumped to 20,000$ and the death penalty was implemented for certain drugs, such as heroine.
