Abraham Lincoln was the President during the time of the Civil war. He was also well known for writing the Emancipation Proclamation. Abraham was also the person that gave orders to the Union army generals through the telegraph that used Morse Code.

The weapon Bayonet was one of the most commonly used weapon used during the civil war. It was a dagger- like steel weapon that is attached to or at the muzzle of a gun and used for stabbing in combat. Was first used in the early 17th century and later than used in the Civil war.

Communication was a very important part of the war. For example, Lincoln communicated by the invention of the telegraph for recent updates of battles. It was not easy to communicate before the telegraph because it took days to deliver a message by horse.

A lot of boys and young men in the north and south were drafted in to the army. Draft means higher power selects a person or a group of people for a certain purpose. In this case it's the civil war.

Entrenchments are long cuts (trenches) dug out of the earth with the dirt piled up into a mound in front. This military technique is used for defense and safety. These trenches were very common with the Confederate army although the first 2 years of war these were ignored.

The Battle of fort Sumter was one of the well known battles in the Civil war. The union took over Sumter before the dividing of the Confederacy. Also, Fort Sumter is located in South Carolina.

Ulysses S. Grant was one of the most well known Generals of the Union army during the Civil War. Grant was once a student at West Point. After the war, Grant was elected into office and was the 18th president of the United States.

Hardship was common thing during this time period. With sickness, weather, food, and shelter. Also with the grief knowing that you are fighting your "brothers" in war.

Independence was a big part in what started the war. Independence from their owner was all the slaves wanted. The definition of independence states that it's freedom from the control, influence, support, aid, or the like, of others.

Thomas Jonathan Jackson or "Stonewall" Jackson was the best- known Confederate Army general right after Robert E. Lee. Like many other Generals during this time period, Jackson attended West Point in 1842. He was a big part of Valley Campaign of 1862 and he severed as a corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia. Confederate picket accidentally shot Jackson in the arm and had it amputated. He survived the amputation, but came down with pneumonia and died 8 days later.

A kepi was a cap that both the Union and the Confederate army wore. This was a forage cap with a visor and round flat top. This style of hat was first worn by the French military.

Land was a big part of what determined where the battles were held. Most of the battles were in the South because they had a lot more land that wasn't populated, like in the forests. However, the South had an advantage of knowing the area when they fought.

The Battle of Manassas or "Battle of Bull Run" was the Battle of the Civil War. It was fought on July 21, 1861 in Prince William County, Virginia. It was soon a victory the Confederate army.

To nullify means to ignore the laws made by the government. It's basically what the South did when the Government made laws they didn't like. So, the south made up their own laws.

Before and during the war, slaves were usually owned by Caucasian citizens. Also there is the type of owner that possesses land. These roles played a big part in the civil war and it effected many people and it also effected the land after all the battles.

The battle of Pocotaligo was fought in Yamassee, South Carolina. This battle was won by the Union on May 29, 1862. The Generals of this battle are Benjamin C. Christ (Union) and Colonel William S. Walker (Confederacy.

Railroads were a very important part in transportation during this time period. They delivered supplies and union troops to and from battles. The railroads were used by both armies, but Lincoln actually used it for tactful services.

Secession is the act of leaving the Federal government of the U.S. The south felt hounded by the north so, South Carolina was the first state to secede then the rest followed. The president of the confederacy was Jefferson Davis.

Typhoid was a common disease from all the bad sanitary that the armies practiced. It was a bacterial disease causing fever, diarrhea, headaches, and it also caused extreme fatigue. Typhoid is caused by Salmonella. Salmonella is usually in uncooked chicken from the food they served the soldiers.

A famous anti-slavery novel that helped arouse the idea of freedom for slaves. This novel was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Uncle Tom's Cabin was published March 20, 1852.

Volunteer was usually a person who was willing to fight for free with out a cost. Like in Glory, the regiment that the movie was based off were all volunteers because they wanted to fight for what they believed in. Most of the soldiers were not paid unless they were ranked, such as a General.

West Point was the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. This military school for more than 1,000 officers in both the Union and Confederate armies. West Point was established in March 16, 1802. General Lee, Grant, Beauregard, Anderson, and many more great generals went to this prestigious military school.

Yankee was a slang term often used for a Northerner. The South usually despised the "Yankees" because they were loyal to the Federal government (Lincoln). This term is still used, but in more of a joking way.

A uniform that was modeled after the French African troops who were known for their bravery. These colorful troops were found in both the Union and Confederate army.These were first worn in Algeria 1831 .

The Mexican American War: It ended in 1848 when America ceded western territories. America had a hard time deciding whether to accept them as free or slave states. Congress then compromised in 1850 which made California a free and allowed citizens of Utah and New Mexico to pick what they wanted.

The Dred Scott Decision: Dred Scott was a slave living in a free state with his owner. He then went to National congress to gain his freedom in 1857. He was considered property of the owner so he was not granted the rights of freedom.

Uncle Tom's Cabin was released: Harriet Beecher Stowe novel was published March 20, 1852. She was a white abolitionist that showed the downside of slavery through this novel. It was once the best seller during this time period, this then decided the northerners opinion about slavery.

The North had a more complex and advance economy than the south. They had built more railroad systems and used them for more than one reason than transportation. The North had a total of 22,000 miles of track when the South only had 9,500 miles of track laid.

Sherman's March impacted Georgia by William T. Sherman capturing the city of Atlanta and capturing the port of Savannah. Also, he believed that the this would convince Confederate's people that their government can not protect them from invaders.

Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse in Appomattox, Virginia in April 9, 1865.
