He was born on Thursday, August 12, 1937, in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Walter Dean Myers suffered a tragedy in his life that forced him to move. Where did he move and why did he have to move there?

He had to move from Martinsburg, Vest Virginia to Harlem, New York. After his mother died while giving birth to his sister, his father's first wife, Florence, adopted him into her family. He had to move to Harlem because that is where the Dean family lived.
