Suffering

Reflection/Journal Time

CCC 1500

Illness and suffering have always been among the gravest problems confronted in human life. In illness, man experiences his powerlessness, his limitations and his finitude.

  • Do you consider yourself a loving person? Why or why not?
  • Is forgiveness easy? Why or why not?
  • Think of time when it was hard for you to forgive someone. What made it so hard?
  • What are some of the obstacles that might be keeping you from being forgiving?
  • How can you give you give glory to God in your hard times?
  • What is suffering to you?
  • Why do bad things happen?
  • Why do we suffer?

CCC 1505

On the cross, Christ took upon himself the whole weight of evil and took away the "sin of the world," of which illness is only a consequence. By his passion and death on the cross Christ has given a new meaning to suffering: it can henceforth configure us to him and unite us with his redemptive Passion.

CCC 418

As a result of original sin, human nature is weakened in its powers, subject to ignorance, suffering and the domination of death, and inclined to sin.

CCC 272

Christ crucified is thus "the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. It is in Christ's Resurrection and exaltation that the Father has shown forth "the immeasurable greatness of his pwer in us who believe."
