The Abyssal Plain is the area at the bottom of the ocean. The land is flat smooth and mostly unexplored. Did you know that humans know more about the moon than the bottom of the ocean?
The Abyssal Plain is usually in between 3000 and 6000 meters below the surface of the ocean.
The Abyssal Plain covers more than 50% of the Earths surface. It is more common in the Atlantic Ocean than the Indian or Pacific Ocean.
The Abyssal Plain is pitch black because sunlight cant reach down there.
Food Chain Example
The Abyssal Plain is important to all of the world because it covers more than half of earths surface and if the animals go extinct it messes up all of the Earths food chain
Technology to explore the Abyssal Plain is still in progress. We have submarines but that's about it. Hopefully this sort of technology will improve in the future
-The usual temperature in the Abyssal Plain is 0 to -4 degrees Celsius but it can get up to 464 degrees Celsius near hydrothermal vents.
-The water in the Abyssal Plain is about 3.4 -3.5% salt OR 34-35 parts per thousand.
-The ground of the abyssal plain is a thick layer of sediment made up of mostly clay and silt.
The ground is completely flat and featureless.
Because of humans, the entire ecosystem in the Abyssal Plain is messed up. Humans use the Abyssal Plain to dump radioactive and hazardous waste. They dump things like ships and oil rigs too. Hydrothermal vent can also cause heat pollution in the Abyssal Plain
The plant life is very scarce in the abyssal plain and the only plants there are live near hydrothermal vents for sunlight
Most of the animals that live in the Abyssal plain either don't have eyes, are blind, or produce their own light. Some animals that live in the abyssal plain are Angler Fish, elephant eyed (dumbo) octopus, sea cucumbers, and feeler fish. Most of these animals feed on minimal plants and small fish and shrimp. Most of them don't need to see to survive.
