The crest is a Blue Jay as it is the official emblem or symbol of PEI. It hold in its beak a leaf from a red oak tree (which is the official tree of PEI). The Royal Crown that sits upon the birds head is the symbol of ultimate constitutional authority.

The golden helmet between the shield and the crest is a symbolizees sovereignty representing Prince Edward Island's co-sovereign status in Confederation. The helmet has mantling and a wreath in red and white, the national colours of Canada since 1921.

  • The two silver foxes serve as supporters. They are rare and native to the region of PEI.
  • The pelts of the silver fox were highly prized in many parts of the world and fur farming was perfected on the island.
  • The foxes also symbolize sagacity, wit and wisdom, which can also be attributed to Islanders.
  • The silver foxes also represent international industry which further symbolizes inspiration, ingenuity and perseverance.
  • The garland of potato and the length of a fishing net are worn by the foxes as a symbol to the other industries on the Island.
  • The upper section of the shield features a English heraldic lion which appeared both on the Coat of Arms of Prince Edward, for whom the province is named, and on that of King Edward VII himself.
  • The lower section shows a large oak tree on the right and three young saplings on the left.
  • The larger, mature tree represent England and the three saplings stand for the three counties in which the province has been divided since 1767.
  • At the centre, lies an eight-pointed star, a symbol used by the Mi'kmaq people for centuries to represent the sun, which plays a central role in traditional spiritual life of the earliest known inhabitants of the region.
  • This star is drawn as if woven of porcupine quill, a popular Mi'kmaq art form.
  • Around the star, floral representations of other founding people are located.
  • Roses represent England, Lililes represnt France, Thistles represent Scotland, and Shamrocks for Ireland.
  • Pink Lady's Slipper is the official flower of PEI.

"Parva Sub Ingenti" translates to "the small under the protection of the great," and some believe it may have been chosen to define the relationship of a colony to England, the mother country.
