Jacob Warren Brooks

My great-great-great grandfather Jacob Warren Brooks, from Alabama, was mustered into the Confederacy by Colonel Robert Miller to serve in the Civil War. He fought in the battles of Shiloh and Warrington. He was wounded in the knee at the battle of Shiloh.

Jacob moves to Pioneer

Jacob then moved to Pioneer, Eastland County, Texas in late 1897. He moved because he thought he would be more successful. It turns out he was right! Later, he got into the oil business. At one time, wells on his land produced 20,000 barrels of oil a day! He also met and married his 2nd wife, Catherine Cerina Burrows, with whom he had 7 more children.

Life after the war

During the Civil War, Jacob married his 1st wife, Louiza Phelps, while on furlough. Louiza was half Native American. Jacob was honorably discharged in 1865. With Louiza, he had 8 girls and 3 boys. One of those boys was my great-great grandfather, Robert Shadrick Brooks.

Leaving Mississipi

After the war, the Brooks family moved from Mississippi to Brownwood, Texas to seek better opportunities. However, the soil was poor and after a severe drought and Louiza's death, the family decided to seek a better home.
