The Villain

This is the character who struggles against te hero. Typically, with some sort of scarring. The villain will usually wear dark and mysterious colours and not very attractive. This is to juxtapose between the hero and the villain; to highlight their differences.

An example would be 'The Joker' who provides an evil presence in the film 'The Dark Knight'.

The Hero

  • The most common character type
  • The character who eliminates the villain and gets the girl.
  • An example would be 'Spiderman' in which he eventually defeats the villain and gets the girl.

Vladimir Propp

Vladimir Propp was a literary critic and a scholar who founded the idea that a certain type of character was to be used in every narrative structure. Hos theory has influence many filmmakers to writing and producing successful narratives. Propp also suggested that all fairy tales follow a specific narrative structure.

Binary Opposition Theory - Levi Strauss

Theorists

Examples

Our understanding of the word "villain" depends on the difference between that word and the opposing word "hero". Within the media field, binary oppositions are used very frequently in films, especially in horror and action genres. Many of these genres include sets of binary opposition in their plots. Particularly good and evil, sane and insane, rational and irrational and human and supernatural.

Theory

How this theory links to my work

The ways in which this theorist links to my media products is through the use of my characters. Both of the characters that I use are very individualistic and have different effects on the viewer watching the film. Due to their binary opposites it creates conflict in the film which results in climax in the structure of the narrative. A similar binary opposition would be Batman and The Joker. These two have a rivalry that results in conflict that will result in more destruction within the narrative.

Levi Strauss theory is that the conflict is based around the binary opposites and that the binary opposites are the central climax of a narrative structure.
