Legacy of Self Government

Self Government in the Colonies

  • It develop the constitution and divide the power into three different branches so they can be checked and balance. No one would be powerful than the other branches and help establish the Americas due to fight for independence with unfair taxes from the document of Common Sense by Thomas Paine.

  • It allowed them to elect their own representative
  • Colonist gained more individual rights so it will not become a tyranny

  • It allowed self government in the colonies which started in Connecticut with a Puritan Clergy man
  • This established religious tolerance in the colony

Virginia House of Burgess 1619

  • 1st assembly and represent government in the colonies which happen in Virginia
  • It was made after the English Parliamentary

The Magna Carta 1215

The Mayflower Compact 1620

  • When the pilgrims sailed from England and made the document to allow self government in the new world on the boat
  • To ensure democratic system and protect individual rights
  • First document of self government in the world
  • The English king named (King John ) who abused his power and the people had no rights so it led to this document to be created
  • King John did unfair taxes and became a dictator who limit individual rights
  • This document limited the power of the King and gave rights to the people

The English Bill of Rights

  • This document granted more individual rights like the consent of the governed
  • It was basis for the 10 amendment which became the bill of rights in the consititution
