What is Religion?

Influence:

Religion is defined as a system of beliefs and practice by means of which a group of people struggle with the ultimate problems of human life

-Gives meaning, purpose, and often, a goal to aspire to when life is complete.

-Gives codes of behavior for society and culture, such as the Ten Commandments and the Torah in Jewish religion

-Five human values of Religion: Truth, Right Conduct, Love, Peace and Non-violence at their core

-Examples: Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islamic, Atheism

Research:

- Many scholars have gathered evidence tracing the strong correlation between contemporary religious observance in America and virtuous behavior

How Religion Affects You:

- Common events in cultures: Home, farming, relationships, marriage, birth and death are related to religion

- According to estimates, more than 90 percent of those who attend weekly worship services donate to charity, and nearly 70 percent volunteer for charitable causes

- Values: principles or standards of behavior

- Morality: difference between right and wrong

Parental Religiosity:

- Parental religious beliefs and practices are predictive of child and adolescent religiosity
